To conclude, in the Attorney General’s statement he said the family is being forced to ‘relive a nightmare we thought was behind us’ after a recent hearing for Adnan. A statement by the Maryland Attorney General added that the family feels like the podcast is willingly leaving out the incriminating evidence, “unlike those who learn about this case on the internet, we sat and watched every day of both trials – so many witnesses, so much evidence.’. The family has spoken out saying the podcast has resulted in very few people are willing to speak out for Hae due to the podcast’s popularity and its speculation towards Adnan’s innocence, which makes it even harder to deal with. A Daily Mail article from 2016 focuses on how the, “Family of ‘Serial’ victim Hae Min Lee say her convicted killer Adnan Syed ‘destroyed our family’ in emotional letter that slams the podcast’s fans for running to defend him” (Wills Robinson, 2016). Now, almost 20 years after the death of Hae, the family says reliving the crime has ‘reopened wounds few can imagine’.

When considering whether the victim’s (Hae Min Lee’s) family would be affected by the Serial podcast, I would imagine it would bring up old emotions they’ve been trying to fight off for years. I personally really enjoy crime drama and podcasts so I am very excited that for school work and grades I get to explore media that is so enjoyable to me. This is why I try not to judge Sarah for being biased, because I still enjoy listening or watching documentaries which use this form of conveying information and know I am guilty of it as well. This documentary is extremely biased, even more so than Serial, because they are trying to prove that these ‘criminals” are as innocent as can be.

For example, I’ll watch The Confession Tapes, a documentary series on Netflix that discusses cases which had false confessions which lead to the conviction of innocent people. I do unfortunately find the narrative to be biased, but I know from experience that’s the best way to get people on your side. Serial is different to the other podcasts I listen to, and is a very intriguing story, which is why I am inclined to keep listening. At this point in time I am impartial on Adnan’s innocence which is difficult because I found the Serial podcast to be biased.

Going forward, Koenig continues to explore the case of Hae Min Lee’s murder and trial to try for herself to discover the right verdict for Adnan Syed, even though the case is closed.

Adnan had an alibi, and no DNA evidence linking him to the crime, yet the investigation is biased against him. Serial episode one discusses that eerie January in 1999 when the death of high school student Hae Min Lee left all fingers pointing at her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. I read multiple reviews, or go to Business Insider before choosing a new podcast to subscribe to because I tend to be picky, but with Serial I was instantly hooked despite the lack of research I did beforehand. Usually when I go out to find a new podcast it is a lot of guessing and testing. The first episode of Serial, hosted by Sarah Koenig, instantly caught my attention. But this weekend, as I take another of those bumper to bumper trips, I think I’ll listen to the podcast Serial. The high school scene, the shifting statements to police, the prejudices, the sketchy alibis, the scant forensic evidence - all of it leads back to the most basic questions: How can you know a person’s character? How can you tell what they’re capable of? In Season One of Serial, she looks for answers.I often listen to business podcasts when driving to and from Toronto where my boyfriend lives. She discovered that the trial covered up a far more complicated story than the jury – or the public – ever got to hear. Sarah Koenig sorted through thousands of documents, listened to trial testimony and police interrogations, and talked to everyone she could find who remembered what happened between Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae's body. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was sentenced to life in prison. A high-school senior named Hae Min Lee disappeared one day after school in 1999, in Baltimore County, Maryland. A month later, her body was found in a city park.
